Nice Systems board to discuss Americas chief Barak Eilam as CEO

JERUSALEM - Israeli-based software provider Nice Systems said its board will meet on Tuesday to discuss a proposal to appoint Barak Eilam as its new chief executive officer. Eilam, currently president of Nice's Americas region the past year and a half, would replace Zeevi Bregman, who has been CEO since September 2009. Eilam previously was the head of sales and the general manager of Nice's Enterprise Group in the Americas. Under his leadership he guided Nice's enterprise business growth into advanced application and business solutions.

Is Apple Dying Without Steve Jobs?

Steve Jobs died on 5 October 2011, the day after the launch of the iPhone 4S. His chosen successor, Tim Cook, was already installed as Apple's chief executive and, after initially faltering, the share price recovered, rising 76 per cent in the following year. Apple, after Jobs, began to ossify, to lose its ability to scatter "Insanely great" products over the adoring masses. The "Apple Death Knell Counter" at the Mac Observer website records 63 premature obituaries since 1995, the most recent being in July, when an article on the CBS site carried the headline: "Why Apple is a dead company walking". Apple, too, had copied ideas - notably the computer mouse from Xerox - but any defence from Google along those lines could not dent Jobs's conviction that Apple had invented everything.

Latest Apple iWatch Rumors: New Battery Technology

What if a company like Apple managed a battery revolution trifecta, implementing solar, motion and inductive charging into hypothetical wearable technology? None of that wearable tech exists, of course: there is no Apple iWatch, or Apple iFitness band, or Apple iSeeYou headgear, or insert your own wishfully-wide-eyed concoction here. We've heard plenty about Apple's solar-charging patent lately, but as my colleague Jared Newman sagely noted, patents can mean everything or nothing. Apple could roll out a solar-powered iPhone next weekor never, and second-guessing timeframes is a fool's errand. Whoever does, if the leap is grand enough and not more of this piecemeal approach, stands to do more for mobile futurism than any mobile idea we've yet seen from Apple, Google and the rest.

Lenovo: Goal is to surpass Apple, Samsung

Lenovo Chief Executive Yuanqing Yang said his company purchased Motorola with the goal of surpassing Apple and Samsung, the current leaders in the smartphone market. Asked Thursday by CNN Money if Lenovo can catch up to Apple and Samsung, Yang said, "Definitely, over time. Our mission is to surpass them." Lenovo is already a smartphone leader in China and emerging markets, while Motorola has established brands in the U.S., Latin America and parts of Europe. Even if Lenovo sells that many devices, it will still be far behind Samsung and Apple.

Apple skips Super Bowl, posts Mac 30th anniversary ad on YouTube

Apple's 30th anniversary Mac ad shot on iPhones. Even worse, Apple didn't run an ad to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Mac and its iconic Big Brother Super Bowl ad as many fans had hoped the company might. Monday morning the Apple faithful awoke to a little treat. Turns out the company did make an ad. In a sign of the times instead of shelling out a fortune to run it on TV, they posted it on the company's website and on YouTube.

Apple iPad Air Ad: A Cruel Commercial for a Struggling Economy

From the now-legendary 1984 spot, with its Big Brother dystopia, to its 1990s mishmash of the "Crazy ones" who dared to "Think different," Apple has long branded itself as the cool, free-thinking alternative to the tech lemmings populating mass culture: Justin Long's hipster Mac to John Hodgeman's square PC. The problem, of course, is that Apple is the establishment now. Enter "Your Verse." Now that consumers are comfortable with computing on smartphones and tablets, Apple can dispense with the utilitarian ads that characterize most product introductions, like the ones that once smugly informed us that "There's an app for that." Much like Apple's earliest ads, "Your Verse" isn't selling a product so much as a lifestyle-a better way of living-but on a deeper level it reflects America's anxiety amidst a sluggish, jobless recovery. Last year, amid revelations about labor abuses at its Foxconn factories, Apple ginned up its "Designed by Apple in California" slogan-a chipper way of declaring, "No sweatshops here!" But Americans are still uneasy about technology's role in worker productivity, global supply chains, and outsourced employment, and whether Silicon Valley, on balance, giveth or taketh away in this brave new economy. Now, with "Your Verse," Apple is telling the American people that jobs are important, but they're not everything in life.
